Florida (Celebrate the States)
Published in Library Binding by Benchmark Books (May, 1998)
Author: Perry Chang
Average review score:

Great for teaching about your state
I liked the way the author integrated stories and personal accounts into the informational sections. All of the people interviewed were personal friends of the author and the ease of which they tell their story shows. Children can comprehend on a more personal level the impact they may have on their state and with encouragement become active citizens. While the government section is a little bogged down, it serves as a good reference to get kids started.

The Forever Drug

One last chance is... one last chance.
Venture Silk is now on New Earth being supported by his lover, spy/ intelligence agent, Zia Relanj who has just been awarded a secret "Immortality" medical treatment for her services in New Earth Security. While Venture is trying to restore his apparent loss of self esteem, created by being a man without work, Zia discovers that there is a unknown side effect to the Forever Drug... She can now read minds. Slowly she begins to realize the dangers inherent if any government discovers that a person that can live hundreds of years, can also read minds. But she also has plenty of excuses for the delay. Starting with, Venture's moving out of her home, the instinct that someone is following her and the awareness that whoever it is, is very, very good. And probably very, very dangerous.

For over a year I've been passing up "SPINDOC" by Perry. The back cover write up just didn't interest me. This book is Part 2 of "SPINDOC". Although "THE FOREVER DRUG' is a neat stand-alone story, enough hints of what happened previously mean that now I have to get a copy of "SPINDOC", and it's no longer on the shelf at my local bookstore. I should have known better than to pass up a book by Perry.

Ghosts of the Colorado Plains
Published in Paperback by Ohio Univ Pr (Trd) (December, 1996)
Author: Perry Eberhart
Average review score:

A good overall view of life on the prairie.
I found this to be a nice and not overly deep view of life on the Colorado plains. An area that is generally overlooked or forgotten today, the prairie played an important part in the settlemnet of the west and not much is left for us to learn from, and this book presented some obscure facts and tidbits of information that I found fascinating. As a history buff, I find it very interesting to see where man has been and may end up in the future.

The Haight-Ashbury

Author: Charles Perry

Telling it like it was
This book is an excellent source for those seeking an unbiased, non-romanticized account of the period when San Francisco was the center of a cultural whirlwind. By the time the media caught up, it was pretty much over with. A very readable work. Beware, may bring about flashbacks. A definite candidate for another printing.

The Happy Hour Guide: A Group Approach to Helping People Help Themselves
Published in Paperback by New View Publications (October, 1995)
Author: E. Perry Good
Average review score:

The "Happy Hour" Guide
The "Happy Hour" Guide is an easy read and is based on Glasser's Control Theory which states that humans are internally motivated. I have not applied the reading into action but feel it would be easy to follow when working with a group. I feel the information is useful and helpful in preparing for a group meeting. I would like to set up a group and use this guide and would suggest this as a way to prepare for a group whom want to help themselves.

A Good Book
I purchased this book and used it extensively when I was writing up the learningtrip for maximumkids.com. It is well laid out, has a great deal of superb history information, not a little technical help, and plenty of photos. Mr. Perry did a good job on this one.

How to Be Animal Friendly: Choose the Kindest Ways to Eat, Shop, and Have Fun
Published in Paperback by Harper Collins - UK (May, 1999)
Authors: Philippa Perry, Perry Phillipe, Caroline Grimshaw, and Paddy Mounter
Average review score:

Gets young minds thinking (always a dangerous thing :)
I actually saw this book at a toy store and was intrigued by the title. So I bought it and brought it home to read. I am a vegan and a supporter of animal rights, so I was interested to see how this book would get its message across to kids. All in all, the arguments are fair and balanced. They spark topics of discussion without entirely leading them. For instance, there are arguments for eating meat and against it, for animal testing and anti-testing, and so on and so forth. Both sides are presented, and then they are handed off to the kids to decide for themselves. This is something to be greatly appreciated, since most animal rights books can be particularly bent towards there point of view.

There is no denying, however, that the point of this book is to encourage animal rights. While both sides are presented, clearly one side is more favorable (the animals side, of course) This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it is a fact of the book. I had only two complaints with the material: One was the somewhat overzealous promotion of certain activists groups that many parents may not want their younger children to align with. The second was the attempt to make the ancient act of animal sacrifice seem boorish. While there is no denying that past cultures had a less-than-enlightened view of animals, those from a Judeo-Christian heritage may feel that sacrifices were unecessarily attacked.

I would recommend this book for children old enough to discern their own choices. Parents should guide younger children with discussion.

Hungary, 1944-1945 - The Forgotten Tragedy: Germany's Final Offensives During World War II
Published in Paperback by International Specialized Book Services (June, 1998)
Author: Perry Pierik
Average review score:

Incredible book...
Despite sub-par maps, numerous typos and a very rough translation, this book is a must read for any student of the Eastern Front. Never before have I read such a detailed anaylsis of joint German/Hungarian military matters in 1945. Topics covered include poltical relations between the Germans and the Hungarian fascists, the "Final Holocaust", the economic/political realites of oil and war, and the final destruction of the Waffen-SS in its last deperate counterattacks.

One of the best books I have ever read regarding these mostly ignored chapters of World War II.
